Zorbs Reloaded

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna in collaboration with AppRoarr Studios has developed this mobile game that will teach secondary level students on values and the Education4Justice topics. The game will help educate young people on the topics of E4J and get a deep understanding of the important values in one society while engaging themselves in a contemporary multiplayer game. Zorbs Reloaded is a city-building strategy game with an RPG mission component. The players are tasked to rebuild a destroyed planet called Zorb, while preserving some core values like integrity, fairness, and acceptance. There is a “second view” of the game, which is happening on Earth and is accessed through “Missions to Earth” from Zorb. Through the missions, players can earn points by figuring out crime-related scenarios. The earned points (Moral Compass Points) serve as the premium currency and are to be used to advance development back on Zorb. The two views of the game are dedicated to the two types of educational goals: • The city-building strategy part aims at teaching students some core values like integrity, fairness, and acceptance. While rebuilding the planet, they will have to preserve and uphold those in society. • The RPG missions (Missions to Earth) aim at teaching students about the different UNODC mandates through real-life scenarios. The story about Zorbs has been developed internally at UNODC/E4J and aims at teaching primary level students the rule of law and crime prevention values and skills. As such, it provides an ideal backstory and setting for the mobile game for secondary level students, which builds on and develops further the elements of that backstory. The primary level part tells the story of a utopian planet, where there is an abundance of resources, and poverty and crime are non-existent. After many years of improper use of those resources and not respecting basic values, the planet’s inhabitants end up destroying their planet. Four of them survive, however, by upholding certain basic values and flee the planet, ending up on Earth.
