According to tradition, it was written around 6th century BC by the sage Laozi (or Lao Tzu, literally meaning "Old Master"), a record-keeper at the Zhou dynasty court, by whose name the text is known in China. The text's true authorship and date of composition or compilation are still debated, although the oldest excavated text dates back to the late 4th century BC.

I own 7 versions of the Tao te Ching because each has unique interpretations. This has been a great addition to my collection and one of few apps I open daily. Moreover, the developer has been providing fantastic updates which is rare in today’s mobile application world. Oh and that WSJ reviewer needs to get over itself and stop being so politically childish. This app is GREAT!
If we read the Tao with our entire self (particularly this version) we can’t help but understand that only in developing Oneness will we ever gain Wholeness. Jesus, the Buddha, and in this present day, Thich Nhat Hanh, and many other enlightened prophets have much wisdom and guidance to offer us. But the Tao cuts straight to undeniable, unarguable Truth that can only make us into better human beings.
I’ve been looking for an easy way to have the English translation of Tao Te Ching and this app has been by far the best way for me to find the sections I’m looking for ready and on hand. Really appreciate that someone has gone through the work of translating this and creating such a user friendly version that I can refer to on a daily basis
The app has four translations that you can bounce between to gain additional insight. All functions make the app highly conducive to returning day after day. I couldn’t imagine that this would be better than a book, but it is! Congratulations!
(Or whatever the actual text is)—I just assumed there are not a lot of comments because Of that reason. So, it’s all here, not sure what translation and all that, but nothing obviously wrong with the text. Nothing real special, exactly like it said, a free copy of the Tao te Ching. Boom
