Pathos: Nethack Codex

I think first and foremost to new players the most important thing about this game is to be patient. It can be very frustrating at first and downright confusing. The game doesn’t hold your hand and it can be very punishing if you don’t know what to do, but that is a large part of its charm to me. Figuring out a proper way to play the game is rewarding. I love seeing my spell book fill up, or my skillset and stats growing as I progress further I to the dungeons. Plus there is a surprising amount of depth to the game. There are many rules or mechanics to remember but I don’t find it tedious. Overall I think Pathos does an excellent job at making you feel satisfied with the time you’ve put into the game. For new players I would recommend checking out the subreddit for the game. I know a common complaint is that the in game help menu can be hard to understand, and that some might say you shouldn’t need outside help. However, to me I find it more fun to ask questions and browse other posts. The community and the developer are active and ready to give hints and advice. I feel like I always learn something new and it I think the community aspect makes the game feel more lively. I could say more, but the main point I want to get across is be patient, ask questions, and keep playing. It is well worth the effort!

This is so well done that it's an obvious work of love. Took only a few guesses to get the controls figured out. Almost everything can be clicked or hold down for additional information or actions. I'm 60yrs old and have played some from of Rouge or Nethack ever since they first emerged in the 70's and we were making our own computers in our basements. Special request to the developer, I'm sensitive to the siding scroll, any chance of adding a jump scroll or always centered option?

*Edit* : Thanks for the response! Here's what you can do to reproduce the bug: • Switch tile set to classic • Start a run with a new custom character (without a custom portrait, leaving the default portrait) • End the run early • Edit the character you just made and choose a new race, class, and gender. • Finally, Tap outside the race, gender, class selection screen The portrait should be frozen on the last run's portrait, refusing to change dynamically as you make new gender, race, and class selections. It might take a few tries to reproduce the bug, i'm sure you'll reproduce it if you follow these steps. I just reproduced it myself so I know it definitely is reproducible. I hope you'll fix this bug soon! -original bug report starts below- bug I found in the most recent update The portrait doesn't dynamically change when selecting ones gender, race, or class. It remains frozen on the last character you were from your last run. Only when you select your class and proceed to the roll stats screen does the portrait change. Please fix this as soon as possible. Thanks.

The game plays fairly well, but I have yet to get past dungeon level 10. Overall, as entertaining as the game may be, it seems to be player hostile rather than player friendly. An archer in my party will chase after spent arrows and get killed in the process; I can’t order them to stay as a party. Leaves little room for leadership. Opening a door and finding a room full of baddies seems unfair, and player hostile. I doubt that a single player survives, especially when baddies include dragons. My team of three survived, but barely so. The range for archers is hard to peg; sometimes I can shoot from far away, other times if I shoot the player will move up to the baddie and shoot. A good way to get killed in the process; defeats the purpose of being an archer. The game lets me play with companions, but each companion comes with a pet, and the space for moving to the next level or climbing a ladder can be too small for all of them; some get left behind. I can tell a pet, but not a player, to ‘stay’. More to say, but long enough already.

Totally in love with this game. By far one of the most satisfying dungeon crawlers with tons of options for races/classes and countless item types and crafting options. I don’t know of any other crawler where I can craft a semiautomatic rifle, zap enemies with a unicorn horn, get slaughtered in a room full of people summoning devils, eat the corpse of my pet and feel regret, buy a hawaiian shirt, or form an alliance with a kitten. And that was all within just the first couple hours of gameplay. I only wish my pets didn’t perish so easily :D
