Hexaflip: The Action Puzzler

First, let’s state the obvious. Hexaflip was clearly intended to be a freemium game. The daily login rewards and currency system serve absolutely no purpose. But where the game loses one star is the checkpoint system. It really doesn’t help at all. To explain: each level has three gems up for grabs. You don’t need to get them, but the completionist in me does. But most gems disappear after a set time, making speed and precision essential. If you hit a checkpoint after a gem has already disappeared, you have little reason to spend coins on the checkpoint. Other than that, you can tell the developer spent a lot of time on the gameplay. Ultra tight controls that work just as well on a touch screen as they do a controller. New mechanics introduced every couple of levels. Good music. And a scoring system that rewards you for finding the right flow - making it through a level by flipping with no pauses in movement. Great game and a must play.

It feels like the developer spent years on the gameplay and then 2 minutes on everything else. The game itself is fantastic and addictive, but the design is uninspired. There are no bonus objectives or additional features or twists or anything like that. No alternative modes. The music is a very minimum-effort electronic loop. The rest of the visual and sound effects also leave a bit to be desired. But of course what really matters is gameplay, which is why it gets 4 stars. Fun game that is more challenging than it seems, and the controls are perfect. With just a little more work on the presentation, this could easily be the best game on the entire App Store.

This game is so simple yet it’s very well polished. On the surface it seems like any of the thousands of very simple games that are free on the app store, full of ads and junk, yet this like is the upgraded version of that lol. No IAP or ads obviously, it runs very smooth, it uses the haptic feedback A LOT which is so nice, and it’s straight to the point FUN. If you’re looking for a quick time killer to play anytime you have a minute or two to spare, then check this one out.

I love a lot of what has come out on Arcade so far, but Hexaflip is gonna stay on my phone for a while. After fighting through to the end of level 88, I was worried it would be a while before an update, but we got two solid updates close together, and the added mechanics are killer. Quite literally most times. I love the simple idea but great execution, and the lovely skin choices add some fun details to my many attempts. Thanks for a great game.

I love simplicity in mobile games and Hexaflip is about as simple as it can get, tap left to flip left and right to flip... well, you know. But it’s what the developers manage to do on top of that simplicity that makes or breaks a game and this game is made. It urges you to go faster and faster and then trips you up in such a way you only feel like your self is to blame. The perfect outcome for a quick and addictive game.
