Entropy Piano Tuner

I am an amateur trying to tune my own cheap spinet piano. Over the last year, I have gotten pretty good at lever work and setting pins, but could never quite get the bass or treble sides to sound right and was not willing to spend big money on a professional app. This app worked great. I did need to use a professional SD condenser mic to do the analysis portion. I am very happy with the results.

Very promising software! Simple approach and interface. You need to familiarize yourself with the concept of inharmonicity of piano strings to fully understand its importance in piano tuning.

The app worked well and helped me get an old upright piano in tune. It was a little tricky to get the lowest key on the piano to record because it was out of tune too far, but after some adjustment I was able to proceed to the next step and calculate and tune the piano.

I got this and used it on my iPhone & iPad for awhile, but quickly discovered my ear can set a much more even temperament than this can. It stretches the piano nicely, but it is not very good at producing an even progression of thirds and sixths up the piano. You have about two intervals that are way off about every octave, in my experience. If you're looking for a competent tuning device that can get a concert-quality tuning with an optional pitch raise/over pull mode, only has to take readings from five keys (instead of all 88 like this app), supports cloud storage for every tuning file you make, and does an amazing job for the price, check out TuneLab Piano Tuner on the App Store. You'll be so much more satisfied with your tuning. TuneLab can tune to 0.02-cent accuracy and does the job of a $1,000 device.
