I am a long time daily sit meditator who has tried several meditation apps. Been using BRIGHTMIND for close to 9 months. It is by far the best app for what ever level you are at in your meditation practice as your meditations can be customized for focus, level, and time. This app really TEACHES meditation and gives you a timer for so you can use what you’ve learned during your own meditation sit. I found my practice really accelerated when I unlocked the NOTING & LABELING section because then all the sections you’ve already experienced now have the added NOTING & LABELING instruction. Shinzen Young is an excellent teacher whether you’re looking for the secular benefits of increased concentration, equanimity, and clarity from a meditation practice or you’re using meditation on your spiritual enlightenment path. I have found as I have unlocked the various levels that the app gives me the experiences I have had on 7day sits with Shinzen. I happen to be recovering from a stroke which left my 20 year meditation practice in shambles. This app really helped me “remember” what my brain “forgot” and establish new neural pathways of focus and concentration, making my mind A BEAUTIFUL SERVANT, not a dangerous master.
I’ve used several other guided meditation APS and this one is by far my favorite. I am very ADD and find it extremely hard to sit still. I used to find myself checking emails, making lists and getting up to do other things during my meditation time. I now have weened myself off my medication and with Brightmind can sit for 10 minutes and listen. I’m not sure exactly what it is. Maybe it’s the fact that i can customize it. Maybe it’s the voice i chose or maybe it’s blessed with magical unicorn dust. I don’t care i just know I’m experiencing some wonderful benefits including better focus, better mood, ability to handle stress more effectively, living life in a more relaxed state, deeper sleep, better self discipline and I recently overcome a 4 month weight loss plateau that may or may not be directly related. I am really enjoying this app! Brightmind has helped me remain consistent with my meditation & being mindful - I set a goal to meditate at least twice per week - I started with a small, realistic goal, however I use this app pretty much daily & look forward to meditating & unlocking the next step on the app. I’ve even got my husband to meditate with me & we’ve made it part of our nightly routine. I’ve noticed I have been sleeping better at night & peacefully drifting off to sleep without the mental chatter that would so often have me tossing & turning at night. If you are considering paying for the premium access, I would recommend upgrading as i have found that it is worth it.
I have been meditating for 7ish years and have tried Headspace and 10% Happier in addition to Brightmind. I think all three apps are good for people who want to start a meditation practice. That said, for me Brightmind is far and away the most helpful because it is a coherent curriculum that provides a structured progression while also giving a wide variety of options. I had hit a plateau with my meditation practice and was on the verge of giving up. Shinzen Young’s “Unified Mindfulness”, which is the conceptual framework that underlies the app, provides tools that helped me find concentration, clarity, and equanimity in a far more powerful yet flexible way. Other apps, books, and methods seem to repeat the same (to me, stale) advice: “just return to your breath” with a haphazard mixture of voices and guidance saying mostly the exact same thing. Brightmind and Unified Mindfulness guided me through a series of very diverse approaches, allowing me to experiment and find a technique that works FAR better for me than watching my breath. I’m re-energized and committed in a transformed way.
I am new to Brightmind meditation for only a couple of weeks and already I look forward to a daily dose of mindfulness practices. The sessions themselves bring a calmness to my being. The facilitator is clear, encouraging and gives instructions well. I am presently engaged in the core sessions and they seem necessary and fruitfully foundational. In the beginning, I needed additional help from the support staff and support resolved my problem right away. I received this subscription as a gift, but I intend to continue when the gift subscriptions run out. If you are interested in developing your mindfulness practices, Brightmind is the place to come!
