Updated review. No sooner did I post this update below I noticed an update that corrects the screen size for the new iPhone XR. Great job I have change my rating from three stars to five stars! I have always love the Scrabble app on the Apple iPhone. I wish I could give it more stars but this is it really isn’t EA’ s fault. I recently upgraded from the iPhone 6s Plus to the iPhone XR. When I downloaded my apps again I attempted to play scrabble. The iPhone XR’s design doesn’t allow the scores to be visible when you play the game. There is what appears to be a lip that comes around in the border where the receiver and the camera is positioned. Therefore that lip that comes down as a border spreads across the screen on top and covers the score window. Also the actual board does not appear to be a full board on the backs are screen. I’m OK with that part but not being able to see the score makes it difficult to see how I am doing when I play guess the computer. I sent an email to EA the other day advising them of this issue. My screen size is 6.1 inches. Hopefully they can provide a fix that can resize the board.
Earlier versions of this stellar game had a teacher who would frown in disgust if you scored meager points. Sadly, the politically correct everybody wins crowd voiced their collective opinion to the developers, and teacher's harshest critique of your skills is now a small smile and a "good job. Here's how you could have scored more points!" This happens even if you settle on a 15-point word but could have gotten a 70 point all-letter extravaganza. The earlier teacher in that instant would be so horrified at your word choice you'd experience a gut wrenching feeling of having done something horribly wrong. Now you get a gold star for mediocrity. Don't get me wrong, the whole game is awesome. Before it had an edge and you tried hard to please or even best the teacher; now you play to win and want to just flick the teacher in the head for being so complacent. Maybe allow an option in settings where you could set the teacher to "task master" or the current "mediocrity promoter."
Update: things are working again! I also got a nice response from the techs with suggestions. My only complaint is still that every time I check the dictionary or write a message, it rewrites the previous word which is just annoying and time consuming. But overall things are back to normal. Update 2017: well, things aren't better. First, the app crashes regularly. I have to delete and reinstall every time I want to play. Notifications are delayed. Every time I check the dictionary or write a message, it rewrites the previous word which is just annoying and time consuming. And you can't see more than one line of text in your message. When will you fix these issues?? 2016: Since the last update there has been a network error when it tries to connect to FB. I haven't been able to play for a month. And since I paid for the app, I'm not enjoying the new ads!
I wrote this review a year or so ago: “App used to be ok. Still ok on iPad. Useless on iPhone. As others have written, for about 2 months the app will not load. I've deleted and reinstalled 4 times. Each time it will work once or twice and then fail. C'mon, EA, it can't be that hard to fix. It worked ok for years.” It has continued to be very inconsistent. It now usually loads, but today it wouldn’t load on either the iPhone or iPad. Another frequent and annoying bug is that when an existing game reloads, it sometimes does not display all of the previously played tiles on the board, or will show a rack from one or even three or four turns earlier, which requires me to do a full close of the app (double-click home and swipe up) and reopen, at which point the rack will be correct and all tiles will be displayed. It’s potentially a five-star app, but EA continues to have persistent and unnecessary bugs. But the game itself is, of course, great, so I continue to plug along.
I am frustrated with this app. My iOS and app are updated. I am signed in via Facebook and can play my other US based Facebook friends, but cannot play any of my international Facebook friends (México, The Netherlands, the UK, New Zealand and Australia). Why? They can play each other, but not those of us living in the US. We are all Facebook friends, why is this not possible as it is on all other games using Facebook? I do understand that they have a green EA Scrabble app, while ours is the red EA version (I can’t get theirs and they cannot get mine), but we are all on Facebook. I’ve gone to the EA site and that’s virtually useless in this area (not to mention the site is absurdly infuriating to deal with). I have gotten quick responses, but they seem to be missing the point of my question as none of their suggestions are useful (they all seem to revolve around updating/reinstalling the app). I want to play Scrabble with all my international Facebook friends on my iPhone. Is this possible? If so, how can we easily do this?? Thank you.
