The concept is great, but they have done a poor job of matching the pictures with the dialogue. There have been a couple of times it was impossible to know which picture to choose because three separate pictures all had the same word describing them. Overall it is a good program for learning a language, but since it has no English translation for the Russian words it would be hard for some just starting out. I had to use Google translate a lot to understand what was being said.
I've bought a couple dozen iPad apps to use in learning Russian. This one is the best for the money. Here's why: You need to hear a lot of Russian before it starts to become intuitive. Of course native Russians speak too fast, and they lose patience with adults who need lots of exposure at a slower pace. Russian--like German, Latin, and Greek--uses a case system to identify the function of nouns in a sentence. The rules for Russian case endings are really complex, and in spoken Russian, you just don't have time to parse every word. Things need to sound right in your head before you speak them out loud. And then the adjectives must also agree with the nouns, and so it has to become intuitive... I think this app allows you to start developing this intuition. Yes! It is well designed and well executed app. I am halfway through the lessons and it is working very well for me. The interface is clean. The photos are interesting. The pronunciation is clear. The speed of speech is slow at first, and by lesson 15, you are hearing Russian at about 90% of normal. I have reviewed some of the last lesson, and I will be very grateful when I can understand Russian at that speed! Check out the free version first, but you will return here if you want to get a fast start on Russian!
I'm really enjoying this app, and it has helped my Russian a lot. I'm using it along with a textbook because I find it helpful to look up the rules as I start understanding the patterns in the phrases presented in the app. So I'd say the whole immersion thing is a little oversold, but still a useful addition to a Russian study program. Update: I've continued to work with this app as I've learned more vocabulary and grammar through my other study tools - RussianPod, flashcards, and a textbook. It is still very helpful! I get more out of each lesson every time I go through it. The spelling exercise really makes you pay attention to the details of the grammar, and the listening exercise helps with listening fluency and vocabulary. The new update has almost doubled the content of the app!
This is one of the best app for learning a language easily and fast. I have several ones in Russian but this by far the best way to learn a language, just like a child does naturally. It is quite similar to rosseta stone system but for the fraction of the price. The free version shows you how pretty and entertaining learning can be, but doesn't really show how well the lessons are designed. You begin with some simple one words and subjects to which then adds actions, qualities etc. I love it so much I will definately get it this course in other languages. To the developers of this course! Spasibo!!
I don't know why I lost my sound on all of my language apps from this company. I have Greek, Russian, and French. No sound. I have the latest operating system in the ipad. ... help!
