I’ve been looking for an audio based workout app to replace Aaptiv, which has, in my opinion, gone downhill of late. I signed up for the 14 day free trial of Pear, strapped on my HRM, grabbed my phone and headed out for an interval run. I really like that I can select a variety of music styles or play my own music if I so choose. Too many times Aaptiv forced me to listen to music I don’t care for just to get the workout I wanted. The Pear heart rate training model takes good to great. I am particularly appreciative of knowing what zone I’m supposed to be in without even glancing at my watch. The user interface is simple, but I don’t need or want complex when I’m running. The coaching is good without being over the top. After my trial is up I’m going to buy a year long subscription. At $40, it’s a steal. I might even buy an Apple Watch and leave my phone and my HRM strap at home. Keep doing what you’re doing Pear!
I just completed my first “session” in my 8 week plan, and I’m excited for what’s in store. I LOVE the fact that I don’t need to have my phone in hand in order to do my workouts, as I purchased an Apple Watch solely for this purpose— no regrets! The only request that I have, right now, is for the addition of more stretch routines for total body. For me, that will be a much appreciated addition as I get really tight and often am not stretching all of the right muscle groups, requiring me to hire someone to stretch me out, and I don’t have the money for that.
I don’t currently use it for running or have any need for the tracking part of this so I cannot speak to that but I can say the indoor/gym workouts are great. I’ve been using it every day since I downloaded it and find it very easy to use and the workouts and trainers are awesome! My one problem with this app is that they have a pandora like music library separated by genre and you can only skip 6 songs in each genre and there seems to be maybe 50 songs for each of the genres. You can “disable” the music in the app and play music from your Apple Music app but then you can’t hear the trainers. It’s really unfortunate. I find myself constantly changing songs during the workouts. If this app allowed you to integrate your own music library/playlist this app would be 100% perfect IMHO!
I really like this app conceptually. It provides a lot of variety of workouts. The trainers are nice and I find that I generally get a good challenging workout with the app. The problem that I have is that the functionality of using Apple Watch as a heart rate monitor is quite poor. When you have a very limited time window for exercise, you don’t want to have to spend an extra 10-15 minutes just trying to get the app to read your heart rate while you workout. Sometimes I can’t even get the watch app to display the workout information at all after starting a workout on the phone. I really wanted to subscribe to this app, but I don’t think I can without significant improvement of the interaction with the watch.
I’ve been using this app since October and love it. Finally decided to get an Apple watch to pair with it so I wouldn’t have to use my phone. I can almost never get it to run properly on my watch. 1 out of 20 sessions it works. It either freezes up, doesn’t sync, or continues to end my workout. Pairing with my Wahoo heart monitor never works, earbuds seldom pair. So now I always run with my phone but even then the app always freezes on my watch, I can never look at my watch to see any data on my run. Instead I find I have to stop and pull out my phone. Very frustrating
