I love having BT in the palm of my hand. It's so much easier than using the web version and definitely easier than toting around the physical copy. I was hesitant about buying it because of so many poor reviews. I realized, though, that some of the reviewers didn't know what they were getting. If you are looking for something to help you with Shakespeare or the King James Bible, this isn't it (those works aren't Old English). This also isn't the OED. However, for OE students or scholars, this is a convenient app.
I have been disappointed in apps before, but none so much as this one. I am so upset at having wasted the money, I have to warn others off of this product. It is too expensive for what it delivers! Which is very little. I thought it would help with the translation of my college level English studies, all I did was make the creator richer. Next time I'll believe the other customers instead of the creators friends!!! DON'T BUY THIS!!
When I took courses in Old English, the Bosworth and Toller dictionary crucial in figuring out translations. The book is also huge. At that time, no one would have thought you could carry it in a device that fits in the palm of your hand. This is a great app for scholars translating Old English. If you are a fan of JRR Tolkien, it's worth the $1.99 to see where he gets names for the Rider's of Rohan Few others will find it interesting.
This app is wonderful and very helpful. Nearly all the words I've looked up have been found. This app isn't for someone who knows nothing about OE. If a word in a sample of text isn't found right away, consider playing around with the form a little. It could be a conjugated verb or a noun or adjective with a case-ending. Overall, this app has proved to be very well done.
I wish I could contact this guy to tell him what an awesome job he is doing with his apps. I am a little upset to see such low average ratings for his apps considering how amazingly helpful they are. I can only hope he will make one for the Old Icelandic dictionary from Oxford by Richard Cleasby (also in the public domain and very rare).
