Airspace Explorer is a flight tracking and airspace education app. It has been developed by NATS (the UK’s leading provider of Air Traffic Control services) in partnership with AirNav Systems (the global flight data provider) and supported by AirTeamImages – the aviation images library. NATS is the UK’s leading provider of Air Traffic Control Services. Each year we handle over 2.2 million flights and 220 million passengers in UK airspace. Airspace Explorer is the lite version of a more comprehensive data and feature rich app that we use at NATS to help with operational awareness. We thought that a lite version of our internal app might be of interest to the general public and be helpful in explaining some of the concepts underpinning Air Traffic Control. The app lets you explore airspace all over the world, discover flights and tap into a wealth of information about airspace, airports, aircraft and airlines. Spin the 3D globe to explore the world, with over 10,000 live flights for you watch in both 2D and 3D modes. Simply tap a plane to discover information for that flight, including departure and destination, location, flight number, airline, altitude, speed and aircraft type. Tap an airport to see live data including arrival and departure boards, airborne flights, satellite photos and the current weather at that location. Explore the airspace over the UK and learn more about the invisible infrastructure underpinning air traffic management. Investigate the different types of controlled and uncontrolled airspace structures in some of the busiest and most complex skies in the world. We hope you enjoy playing with Airspace Explorer and learning a little more about the wonders of modern aviation. To find out more, visit: http://nats.aero/AirspaceExplorer

This app in a technical sense is better than FlightRadar24. It's more technical, has a better user interface, better refreshes and looks more professional. The overlays look really nice on the dark interface of the app. Whereas in Flightradar24 they have tried to put these overlayed on the bland Apple Maps, which makes it look ridiculous. So I much prefer this app for that reason. However, this app still has some way to come. The 3D view is rather buggy and unrealistic because planes appear to be much higher in the sky than they realistically would be. So that needs a bit more work. Also, I prefer using this app when exploring and picking out random aircraft on the map, but it's not very good when it comes to finding a flight or looking at arrival/departure boards at an airport. But overall it's still a really good app. It's still in Beta state so it's got some way to come but hopefully it gets better and better in time to come.

Great app guys. After using Flightradar this app is so refreshing to use and a worthy alternative to most other tracking apps out there. I track aircraft flying over Scotland on their way in and out to USA and Canada. Once they get out of VHF range I then track them on a Shortwave radio. I’m finding in the app that there is very little info on planes flying at 20,000ft and above as the fly overhead. I’m getting the plane type but very little else. No destination or arrival times etc. I’m not getting info from A320 type aircraft as they approach the airport. Regarding not getting info for flights above 20,000ft - I have the altitude sliders set to max - zero to 52,000. Are the issues I am having still in development of the app ? I’m not knocking the effort you guys have put into this app and if the issues raised are something to look forward to as development of the app progresses, then I and probably a lot of other users would gladly pay for enhancements that may be in the pipeline. Glad I found this app for my iPad and hope it’s available for the iPhone soon. Great app - well done,

It's some wierd control system to move around and control the 3D view. Pinching sometimes zooms, but only if you have contorted some other two finger drag first. It's very unintuitive. Scrap this and make it like Apple Maps, people will understand it. After some practice I can often make it do what I want, but it's a steep learning curve. This update still confounds my fingers. It's frustratingly unpredictable.

This was an excellent app with lots of information about flight. Unfortunately there are no planes actually flying!!!, there used to be but not anymore. Have sorted my problem with no planes showing, a message on my screen was saying device time incorrect, the actual time was correct in the country where I had been staying but my home country was still showing in settings, adjusted to the correct country and everything is working as normal again. Still the best app on my iPad.

Since the latest update the app shows no flights anywhere, just a map with airports. Have deleted the app and reinstalled with the same result. I am using an iPad Pro with iOS 10.3.3. Since writing the review above I am happy to report that the problem seems to have resolved itself and the app is working well. Can't think what was wrong!
