eTrails is an electronic hiking guidebook covering the Pacific Crest Trail, the Inland Empire, Los Angeles County, Orange County, and the San Bernardino Mountains. eTrails provides multiple views of trail information, including a databook, a moving map, an elevation profile, and a conventional guidebook.
I think the user interface is terrific. I love the organization of the information and the users ability to move around from the Maps to the guidebook etc. I’m anxious to take this with me in a couple months to San Diego where I will hike 100 miles or so and from Campo north and see how it works in the field. To be continued....
There are several PCT apps. I use this one for the great background info. Info like geology, tree life, names. All sorts of interesting info.
Tried several times...
This was by far my favorite app for the PCT. I am always surprised that more people don’t use it. It described water sources, campsites, and roads that were not in some of the others apps, and the water information was extremely reliable. It contained a wealth of information on natural history and historical information that really enhanced my experience. Plants unique to each region were highlighted- whenever I’d see a new plant, all I needed to do was check etrails, and sure enough, I’d find a description and picture. It also had lots of information about side trails especially for peak bagging and exploring. I only hope this guide gets expanded to include Oregon and Washington.
I can't imagine the amount of work that has gone into this! Maps, photos, guide book and much more rolled into one app. Can't wait until the Oregon section is rolled out and I can try it 'live' on the trail. Every thru hiker should at least check it out!
