Our family really loves this app. It’s fun and exiting finding new facts about your family. It’s incredible to see my grandmothers name on old census records. We have found lots of distant family. It was fun joking to my cousin how now we don’t have wonder if we were adopted LOL. Sometimes you can truly feel like ‘how the heck can I be related to some of the nuts in my family tree.’ Well the proof is in the pudding, there’s no denying it. One word of caution, be very careful when confirming facts LOL. Knowing that a specific member in my tree, 3 generations back was really the milk mans son, I confirmed too hastily the mom’s husband and messed up the tree starting from him back. But it’s great fun. Family secrets come alive right before your eyes. A friend found a brother she didn’t know she had because her daddy had an affair many decades back but they became close family and she attended his wedding. So see, there can be some happy endings if you are brave enough, muaaahahahaha! In our family we have a streak of white hair right in the front, which is pretty dramatic and we found a distant cousin, whom the resemblance between her and I was like WOW! So if you suspect stuff about your Kin and you are mentally prepared for the knowledge hidden within, spit in a cup, and just wait and see. Cuz you just never know, you could be related to me! Muahahahahaha! “JUST DO IT!”

So many bugs, I don’t have time to write them down or attempt to explain them, just believe me when I tell you, You Will Be Frustrated To Distraction. The most glaring problem is the Search Function and the results it displays. I can type the exact name, year of birth and city of birth but it will give you 37,000 hints or maybe none. Another stupid thing is Adding a New Person; why you can’t just have a Add New Person button is ridiculous. You have to make a relationship to an existing person first and then edit/delete the relationship and any other relationships the program created from the fake relationship. Pointless. Last one, although there are at least 20 more things that need improved, when you try to create a relationship to an exiting person, you start by typing in a first name and it suggests everyone in you tree that has that first name, then when you type in the Surname, it ignores the first name and suggests everyone in your tree with that SURNAME. Then if you have 10 people with both the first and last name, it doesn’t allow you to examine them further to see which “John Smith” is the correct one. Oh and the Potential Father/Mother thing is a complete joke. It seems like they just suggest someone from a random tree that has a Father/Mother listed even though there is no way to examine if the person that created that tree us an imbecile or a very good genealogist. Silly program but it’s the best of the worst, so I use it.

Update: working much better! Old: Let me start with the positive: the tree section is lovely, helpful, works well, and I love it. Now, the negative: the DNA section, which updated on the 1 July is not great. It is set up similar to the website, but please consider that apps are used on devices, such as a phone. The DNA section has become a behemoth if information, difficult to manage or view, crashes if you try and look at Cousin matches for a second person... it used to be quite simple and elegant with the 11 generation view, and option but not requirement to open other users’ entire trees. How can I possibly appreciate their full multi- thousand tree of information on my iPhone? I hate to complain, I use the Ancestry app daily. Some people do crosswords or sudoku. I work on the family tree, it’s my favorite puzzle. I just wish I could use the DNA cousins’ section with ease, but it seems to have become way too huge to appreciate as a simple task in bed or during down time, with the phone. It has become a project strictly for sitting at my computer. Is there any chance to make it more convenient for device use? It’s an app, after all. Thanks :)

Do they purposely make searching a complete clusterf**k? Countless examples of ridiculous search results including MY marriage information shows up under my brother’s name but not mine, and why when I enter Joe Blow b. in 1886 and do a search, do I get ZERO hits with the slider all the way to the right even though I got his name and birth year from a search result one minute ago as someone else’s husband? Then slide the bar to the left and no results at all until you get to the far left....AND THEN THERE ARE 15 MILLION results! Still using the App in spite of the almost useless search feature because of so much time invested in it and limited other App choices but hopefully they will fix it and then the App would be solid. Also, they need to add a “Add As A New Person” button to the search results and to the Tree interface. As it is now you have to add a new person to a random person in your tree and then delete the relationship; very stupid. And heaven forbid you want to manually attach someone’s relative to them because when you type in the first name, every person in your tree with that first name is suggested but when you move to the surname field, it doesn’t remember the first name and shows you everyone with that surname; very stupid. Many other stupid features but I’ll have to come back later.

I can’t complain about the amazing range of relatives I’ve discovered going back centuries. But sometimes the hints I get are a little frustrating, because my tree will tell me that “Joseph Smith” is the father of “Sara Brown” while the hints show that Sara is the daughter of “David Jones.” And often it’s hard on the app to navigate your way back to the more remote branches of the tree. That being said, if you’re lucky enough, as I am, to have two parents going back to pre-Revolutionary days (who happen to be light-complected), and suspect that your parents might be distant cousins, you can sometimes find out they are, and also discover Jewish nth-degree great-grandmothers; darker-complected cousins; pastors and poets and actors; Mary Queen of Scots; a slave overseer for Thomas Jefferson 😔; figures such as Robert E. Lee and Martha Washington; Irish criminals deported to the Americas; and an assortment of French Huguenots by way of the British Empire. Your husband might have the DNA test confirm that yes, despite a Greek name and an immigrant from Germany, he is nearly half-Jewish and is attached to storied family fur-trading company owners from Kastoria in Greece who immigrated to the US via Germany. And your children won’t have inherited the same percentages of genes as their siblings. Viva la difference!
